He has previously been managing partner at Short Hills Associates in Clinical Psychology. He served as Director of Professional Affairs for the New Jersey Psychological Association 2005-2017.

He was awarded Psychologist of the Year from the New Jersey Psychological Association and their life- time achievement award in 2015. He was elected President on NJPA and elected President of the American Group Psychotherapy Association in 2018. He was awarded Distinguished Fellow in 2012 from the American Group Psychotherapy Association.

Dr. Helfmann has lectured and written widely on professional practice for mental health providers, ethics, and future health care trends.
